へ(゜∇、°)へI thought of something and I wanted to make sure I would not forget it before I went to bed. In Dear Esther I believe that there are multiple ways for us to determine what really happened. I've come up with a few;1. The island is a dream. The player is actually Esther, who is in a coma, and her husband, the man speaking, is talking to her while she is in a coma. Paul is the one who hit Esther, or something along those lines. The narrator seems to have some sort of relationship with Esther, so it doesn't make sense that some stranger would come into the room of a woman he hit and begin relaying stories that they have shared together. Right, let's say Paul is her spouse's friend or something of the sort. The reason the descriptions jump around the way they do is because they are all taken in while you are in a coma, and the island itself is part of the dream. The end, where you jump off the ariel, is where either Esther dies or she wakes up from the coma.2012-05-16 23:27:36

You are a gull, and you experienced and saw the accident; you'll hear Paul referring to gulls multiple times. へ(゜∇、°)へ3. You are Paul, and you were a passenger in the car when Esther was hit. Both Esther and Paul were in the car with you, but only her husband remained concious. Both you and Esther are in a coma, and her husband is speaking to Esther. You only get mismatched tidbits because you are not the direct recipient of the stories the husband is telling Esther, and so you only get bits and pieces that you can't really comprehend. The island is simply a world that you've created in your comatose state.2012-05-16 23:27:19
へ(゜∇、°)へ4. This is just brainstorming. You notice how he brings up names that are actually first and last names? Jacobson and Paul; Paul Jacobson. Donelly and Esther; Esther Donelly. When you jump off the cliff, you hear a small "come back," implying that someone is saying come back, and everything seems to speed up. If Esther's husband is NOT Paul, then her husband is sitting by her, and her heart monitor goes up, and he says "come back" or something along those lines. The narrator has to be someone other than Paul, because, at one point, he says "I met Paul today," which implicates that the speaker is NOT Paul. Just food for thought, I suppose.2012-05-16 23:27:09
