SplinterIt's straightforward enough to say "I should not use AAVE because that is not my language to speak or my words to say", and it's also straightforward enough to say "hey don't use gifs of black people for a punchline", as we dug deeper into it, I realized it felt a bit off for me to tell my friend "you should not use GIFs of POC **AT ALL**", and that's where things got particularly interesting. What happens when you're trying to use GIFs for allyship or solidarity? Where is the line? What about if I have black friends that are using AAVE and I am invited to participate in that style of speech? If I draw an absolute line and say "no, no, I can't do that because that's a black thing and I'm not black"...am I not just...segregating? SplinterAs the article talks about, it's important to note that blackface and digital blackface are both forms of minstrelsy (aka turning black people into stereotypes or caricatures, like the angry black woman), which originated in the 1840s. AND: Digital blackface is ALSO cultural appropriation. Using African American Vernacular English (AAVE) is a form of cultural appropriation, and black reaction gifs are an interesting cross-section where there is a visual of a black person reacting, and there's also an AAVE caption at the bottom, like "whew, chile" for example.And while it may be easy to remember that *I* should not say "whew chile", does it really apply if I post a black person GIF who is saying that?You see where I'm spotting a potential loophole that can be exploited, right??2022-12-07 22:14:25
