Lord KaneHello. Thank you for the comment you left. Handgonnes were indeed in play during the Wars of the Roses, even though it didn’t play anywhere nearly as important of a role as longbows. When you look at it, raw damage per shot is only one of the many factors. Rate of fire, range, ease to train, cost of manufacturing matter more.2019-09-28 17:50:06

It is true, that during the Hundred Years War, and Wars of the Roses, most English archers were equipped with melee weapons, such as arming swords, rondel daggers, maybe axes, or wooden mallets they used to drive spikes into the ground. Some of them also carried bucklers, and the well-to-do ones wore brigandines or breastplates, and maybe some other piecemeal armor like the couters and poleyns. Indeed once their ammo was exhausted, they were expected to assist fully armored men-at-arms and other infantry units in melee.
