I would suggest using Windfall or Khalt styles while learning attacks because they're the easiest styles to build experience with. If you don't have them, you can join a school and learn the style by using the ability in combat. And while learning, equip armor and prioritize stamina stats/health stats. Alternatively, you can learn timing and direction using Forsaken (my preferred style) but you have to be pretty exact and some attacks are a little difficult to tell direction (thrusts mainly).
